Alyt Damstra is wetenschappelijk medewerker bij de Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het Regeringsbeleid. Daarnaast is zij bijzonder hoogleraar Kennis en Strategische Beleidsadvisering aan de afdeling Politicologie, Universiteit van Amsterdam.
Alyt studeerde politicologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en promoveerde in 2020 in de politieke communicatie aan de Amsterdam School of Communication Research (UvA). Haar promotieonderzoek ging over de wisselwerking tussen de economie, economische berichtgeving en publieke opinie. Daarnaast heeft Alyt onderzoek gedaan naar de invloed van berichtgeving op attitudes, (stem)gedrag en politieke processen. Ze publiceerde o.a. over de relatie tussen nieuws en kennis, negativiteit in het nieuws en media-effecten op politieke voorkeur en waardering voor beleid. Op dit moment is Alyt verbonden aan het internationale onderzoeksproject Knowledge Resistance waarin de politisering van kennis centraal staat. Hoe dit van invloed is op de praktijk van wetenschappelijke beleidsadvisering zal de komende jaren de focus van haar leeropdracht zijn.
